256,000 Miles

For the last two days I've been escorting the seeding and grading contractor's workers and vehicles inside the fence at the St. Louis International airport. I've been driving a 5.4L powered 2006 Superduty F-250 FX4 with 256,000 miles. I can tell you for a fact, this truck has not seen the love the average private owner would have given it. All things considered, it drives out decent, uses no oil, starts, runs, and shifts good....

I plowed snow with a Super Duty last year that had like 200k miles I think. Ran like it was new. I was impressed.

And that is where 'Built Ford Tough' came from.

The intended uses of vehicle determines the miles. Your truck was mostly short distance driving right?

Same here...the odo on Red is right around 160k and the odo on the Bronco just flipped 138k...but then Thunder is right at a 250k. And this truck is 10 years newer than anything I have and still has more miles. And I thought it was nuts when I spread 30,000mi out over 3 rigs.

It did make a 4,000 mile trip from California to Florida, but I have no idea how many times.I don't even know what the truck was used for.I always assumed it was a farm truck at some point because of the hacked taillight wiring. So I have no idea whether it's highway mileage or city mileage.I don't even know if 189,000 is correct.I just assumed that if it still runs with the way it's been treated,it's probably at 189,000.

That is indeed a ton of miles for any engine. Dude must have got a "every component wednesday" truck. Meaning everything was built on a wednesday, and then assembled on a wednesday.

My uncle works for a fertilizer supply company, and his last truck was a 2000 Super Duty 2wd with 5.4/auto. When they got rid of it, it had 390K on it. Motor had never been rebuilt and still ran good. It didn't have an easy life either, spent most of its time delivering fertilizer spreaders to farmers in Indiana state. It had a severely cracked exhaust manifold, and the motor sounded like it had a dead cylinder until it got warmed up and the crack closed up. Truck still drove good.

I like Broncos
Yeah, the mod motors have a few annoying issues (plugs, exhaust manifolds), but for the most part are VERY reliable and will run for a very long time. The bottom ends are extremely stout with crossbolted mains (pretty sure?), the upper ends tend to wear out a little quicker though in regard to the valve train, but still they're very good motors IMO.

One thought- whatever you guys may think/believe about the older rigs, consider this: it's a reasonable expectation to take almost any new vehicle (car or truck) and drive at least 200,000 miles without a major mechanical catastrophe, given reasonable care and diligent maintenance. Our nutritionist recently traded her '02 Toyota 4Runner on a new Ford Edge. Miles on the 4Runner? 273,000- and no issues. She just started getting nervous looking at the odometer driving to Eastern Oregon all the time. (Hated the new 4Runner's, BTW- too big, terrible visibility for a smallish female).

Looking on craigslist and Ebay, 200,000+ mile vehicles aren't uncommon at all. 30 years ago, that would have been extraordinary.

So your saying you'd buy a newer vehicle with say 180,000 miles if you knew it was properly maintained?

I think he is saying that you can safely keep a vehicle if you maintain it properly to 200,000 miles instead of trading for a bigger payment every couple years.

I wouldn't be afraid if it if it was cared for. They can make one helluva buy because of the miles. Know a guy that bought a 3 yr old Park Avenue with a little over 150,000 miles on it. Has since put another 100,000 miles on it with just routine maintainance. Not bad for a $1500 car.

Perzactly.smiliewhathesaid If you aren't hung up on owning the latest and the greatest, you can keep a new car a long, long time. Long past the time the payment book expires.

Which now a days Ern, is a big thing for a lot of people. I know short of needing an entire drive train, my 08 will be in the driveway for a long time. Car payments are so over-rated.

I'd rather put some money into a vehicle every so often if it needs it rather than know every month I have to dish out hundreds of dollars no matter what.
