ATV Oil?

I need some feedback on what ATV owners use for oil. I realize different manufacturers have different requirements. We have two 2004 Polaris Sportsman 400's. Polaris states Polaris 0w-40 is needed. The owners manual says API SH grade. The current API grade is SN. I went looking for some 0W-40 oil today, and all I found was 0W-40 Mobil 1 full synthetic for European cars.

I'm wondering if 5w-40 synthetic would work since it will rarely be driven in temps below 0 deg. The previous owner did make a recommendation.

5W-40 synthetic would be fine Doug.

I personally use this:

But I'm also out when it is below zero.

NP...I do run the factory filters though, my experience with AMSOIL filters has been less than stellar...I have found the dimension tolerances out which led to a half hour battle trying to remove the one from my Canned Ham.

Do you use this in the transmission also? Polaris also recommends their gear lube OR 80-90 gear lube for the back gear case, but they only mention Polaris lube for the front gear case. Is their a suitable substitute for the front gear case.

I think for the trans and front diff your easiest bet is to just get the Polaris oil. A lot of guys run atf or 5w20 in the transmission. Some people say Mobil 424 tractor hydraulic/transmission oil can be used in place of the demand drive oil spec'd for the front diff.

If it were me I wouldn't be too worried to run alternatives... Such as type F instead of Polaris hub oil
