'01 Escape?

Buddy just called, asking about an '01 Escape he's thinking of buying.

Said he thought it was a 4-cyl, 5-speed with four wheel drive.

I don't think they built 4wd (AWD, whatever- he knows the difference but doesn't care) 4-cyls with 5-speeds then, but I can't remember.

Also- any trouble spots? 160k miles, and 8 years old in New England, so rust and/or wear may come into play. He said he's still interested if it's FWD.

*He's not looking for, or expecting, a great truck. He needs fairly inexpensive wheels that will be safe and legal (his present car is neither) and get him through a couple Vermont winters while he saves up to buy what he wants.

Well, he bought it...

Called me tonight as he was driving home, said it was bucking a bit at steady cruising speed.

I'm thinking that it's a fuel delivery issue. If he and his Dad (runs an auto parts store but got fed up with wrenching a lot of years back) can't get it sorted out tomorrow, I may drive over there this weekend and see what's up.

Any suggestions/common problems to look at? Fuel system diagnostic advice?

Fuel filter first, then look at the pump would be my thinking.

They aren't bad little rigs, and the 4 cyl/5 spd combo isn't as underpowered as you'd think. They came as both FWD and AWD in that powertrain combo.

Thanks for the TSB, Vince.

Just heard from him; he had a mechanic his dad knows go over the thing top to bottom, and he's gotten a list of everything it "needs".

He's flippin' his lid 'cause it needs so much stuff; sooner or later he'll probably figure out that it's his own durn fault for not seeing 80% of that before he bought the thing...but at any rate, I told him that if he's willing to wait a couple weeks until I've got time and my tools here, I'll help him with getting a lot of the simpler stuff it needs done.

Hopefully there'll be a case of beer in it for me, at least, if not a fifth of Maker's Mark.

Well, I got a CAN of beer out of it today...:suspicious:

Anyway- '01 Escape with 5-speed manual transaxle. I was guessing it'd still take ATF in the manual gearbox, like my Rangers do, but the Haynes manual says 75W-90.

Since I don't trust the Haynes books anywhere near as far as I can throw them, anybody know which is the correct lubricant for this gearbox?

This is from the manual:

I have an Escape just like his, I love mine. I need to do this very thing to mine soon, let me know how it goes, I may need some pointers if I do it myself.
