What year of motors can used

A friend has a 93 with a 4.0 that has two dead cylinders and replacing it would be the quickest repair so what all years of motors can be used.

2001 was the first year Ranger got the SOHC 4.0, prior to that the 4.0 was OHV. Any of the OHV 4.0's should work fine but be aware that in 1996 OBDII was implemented so he can plan on swapping his intake onto any OBDII 4.0 (and actually, OBDII started to appear somewhere in the 1995 MY). There could be other variations that would require swapping intakes, he'd just have to look and decide is all. Same can be said with exhaust manifolds. Also worth noting is that 94 4.0's sold outside of Kali did NOT have EGR where as Kali versions did; possibly another reason he might find the need to swap intakes.

*I believe the 4.0 OHV first appeared in 1990.
