Torn CV Boot

Is this a job I can tackle myself? The right front boot is torn in half. This is the second one I bought. 2004.5 Polaris Sportsman 400 AWD.

What all is involved in replacing the boot?

I did one on my Suzuki... Not a huge deal. Make sure the kit you get has new clamps. Pull the wheel and hub and pop the axle out of the pumpkin. Take the old boot off and attach your new one

Piece 'o' piss.

Typically:

Remove wheel

Remove castle nut/cotter pin

Remove shock/strut

Possibly remove brake caliper/disc

Yank whole axle shaft assembly out

Buy OEM boot kit

You might want to buy a CV joint seperator tool...I will go and find a pic of the one I have.

You will need a banding tool for the band.

Clean all old grease out...prolly Moly based...wear gloves and use brake kleen

slip boot and bands on....fill cavity with grease (should come with kit)

New circlip on axle shaft where it goes into diff (should come with kit)

Reverse for assembly.

Thank you, both. I will buy a boot, w/accessories and attempt. Yes Duncan, the grease appears to be Moly-based, by appearance. Do I need a spring compressor for the strut, or does it come out as one unit?

I'm not sure as I have never done one on a PoPo...I would guess that it comes out as an assembly.

Ryan might know.

I would suggest you buying the shop manuals...I got the ones for my machine and they have been beyond helpful.

The strut remains attached to the machine and will swing out of the way, you just loosen the lower ball joint pinch bolt, knock out the ball joint and the strut will move out of the way. Several ways to change the boot, you can use a speed boot, or disassemble the CV joint. Do a search on youtube, there are tons of video's about axles.

Thank you, Ryan. I found a manual on ebay, which is on it's way. I got everything apart, slipped the new boot on the axle, and I got the small end of the boot clamped in place. I can't get the large one clamped together. I've been working on that for the last two hours.
