Paging Ian

Since you live in VT, have you ever been up to Stowe in the winter? And if so, what's the snow usually like up there (wet, heavy, etc)?

I've been to Stowe...know the town reasonably well, in fact. It's a bit of a drive, on account of roads running around, rather than over, mountains... but as the crow flies its probably only 10 miles from here.

Unfortunately, I don't ski- so I can't offer a lot of useful info on that topic. And nearly all of my skiing friends think it's too expensive, and buy annual passes elsewhere. I did have an uncle who lived in town and bought a weekday-only pass there, and used the hell out of it. I think he actually moved there for that reason.

But on a general level, it's a good ski area for Vermont...and I think New England snow is considered to be heavier and wetter than western snow. People talk about going west for powder. (But, like I said- I'm not a skier, so it doesn't mean much to me when they say stuff like that.)

Thanks Ian, it's appreciated. Main reason I asked was, I'm shopping for new skis, there is an online store that posted an ewetube vid of a ski I'm considering that was shot up at Stowe, and as much as I've heard about typical snow out there (exactly what you said, heavy and wet) I wanted to confirm as it does matter. BTW, I looked up info on the resort, that's a super nice place! On the money, overall, skiing isn't the cheapest winter sport out there which is nice in that, the lift ticket prices seem to discourage the riff-raff from infiltrating the environment. On a more personal level at premium resorts, I've skied a destination resort by the name of Whister/Blackcomb Mtn up in BC; ticket prices today are $156 CA. What you get for the $ aren't automatically better runs (compared to what's close to me and lift tickets today are $58-$78) but instead, many will be much longer and more of them. Great experience!

Was drinking beer with a skiing friend tonight- in fact, before he made it to the bar, he'd been skiing in Stowe.

So I asked...he said heavy and wet, or sometimes hard and icy.

Same type of snow we have here heavy and wet normally. It freezes and melts creating a crust that rips your skis up. The powder is so nice to ski on. The crusty ice stuff you chatter on any easy turn and you pucker up on sharp turns.

Thanks Randy, another confirmation of what I've heard. Sounds like you ski so we both know how miserable and potentially dangerous it can be to ski on frozen and/or frozed groomed runs. Hook an edge and boom, loss of control and it can happen real fast.

I haven't hit the slope for a few years. Used to go a few times a week years ago. The wife doesn't ski at all. About everything here is grommed and lots of man made snow. Have never snow boarded yet every time I have watched other's to get a idea of how it's done someone gets hurt and I say not today.

Snow conditions (other than mister and heavier) sound similar to here, groomed runs are pretty common and powder, it happens but seldom very deep. Snowboards.....I've never tried it and spending a bunch of time on my butt doesn't sound like fun, but I'll admit that the idea of paying for a one-time lesson and board rental has crossed my mind. I believe these deals are pretty reasonable, maybe $50 or $60. On the other hand, my heart starts pounding when see the snowmobiles hauling things around, makes me wished I could cut loose on one for a few hours.

I skied Whistler in 1975, BEFORE passports, and before it was another Aspen.

I went up there with a girlfriend, so skiing wasn't my primary objective......

^^^ I've skied Whistler/Blackcomb before, and FWIW I have never in my life experienced powder so good before or after that experience. Yeah, it's an Aspen and yeah, bring your wallet, but it's so worthy!!!!!

Tomorrow a bunch of us are headed to Lookout Pass. The weather has been absolutely epic the last few days, 19" of new POWDER in the last 48 hours and 11" in the last 24. DOT cams this morning reveal the pass is sucky. This is great as it encourages the idiots to stay home and watch TV, lol. I <3 big dumps.
