It was a 1.8 watt solar charger from NAPA for $36.00. The beauty of the '78 is that the cigarette lighter is hot all the time, so I just plugged the charger into the cigarette lighter. Easy Peazy.

The newer cars don't have an active cigarette lighter when the ignition switch is off, so I used alligator clips from the inside to the battery(provided).

Here is the caveat; these are NOT intended to charge a battery, but rather to maintain a fully charged battery. A full battery charge is necessary before using the solar powered charger.

Thus far, I'm impressed.
Cool Doug, glad to hear that it's working out.

The issue is that a battery sitting will self discharge regardless....so keeping a trickle charge on it prolongs the battery life.

When it comes to solar panels, esp. for RV applications, you need at least a bank of two that are series wired and then feed a charge controller. Batteries ideally need at least 3 levels of charge....bulk, absorb and float....those voltages (for a 12V battery) will range from around 13.5 to 14.8.

So you have 2 panels with an OCV (open cct voltage) of say 35 volts in ideal conditions that might drop off to 10 under cloud...so no way that the batteries are going to get a charge.

With 2 in series, they are fed into a bucking converter (reduces voltage) with a high effeciency (>97%) to enable the batteries to get an ample charge.

That is the simplified version.

So if I read this correctly a battery tender and extension cord.......

When Dodge and GM build something that will compete with the F450, we'll talk.

That is by far the cheapest way to go!

I'm eyeballing 4 235 watt panels for the Bird, but given the use, the genny will suffice for now.

Yep, gas is cheap, the payback on panels and electronics would be somewhere between Obama's America and Never.

Your application (and mine for that matter) we would be better off with 8 6V's, peak with the genny in the AM for an hour, and again in the evening for an hour. Run the genny anywhere in between for heavy load stuff. Then do all the high tech crap to the batteries at home on purchase power.

Got 6 6V in it factory, parasitic load is big...8a/hr.

We will see what happens. Will be replacing the exisitng ones with 4 6V L16 Surrette S550's this year regardless.

Relays.....propane solenoid.....inverter on standby...I could kill most stuff during the day if I'm not in it and don't need heat, but at night it's not an option.
