Pulling Heads

Hey fellas...the 400 in the Bronco is going to get all new seals and gaskets this weekend. However, there's one area I'm a little hesitant about, pulling the heads to replace the head gaskets. I've never done it before. Is it just a matter of a couple bolts and takin the exh. manis off and boom you have a heavy chunk of iron in your hands? Or is there more to it? I don't believe there are any leaks, but I figure as long as I'm doing everything, the HG's should be done as well.

Intake has to come off as well ben...
But if your doin gaskets you will already be that far, so yes few bolts and exhaust manifolds....
Then you have a heavy chunk of iron in your hands.
Make sure you get them torqed to spec though.

Alright...thanks Don

Usually I stop right AFTER the bolt breaks.

Well it seems you can tell when a bolt is too tight.

But over tightening and under tightening both lead to leaks, incase you didn't know...

Yeah I know...I was being facetious

I know you were being, what ever the F that word is..
If i think i know the proper meaning... Meh owell...

Just weld your engine together, no need for gaskets!!!!!!!

fuh-see-shus=sarcastic humor...more or less.

As for welding my engine together...that's a brilliant idea...then we can go to town on my on the R&P next.

I was thinking about that...
Rebuild would be outta the question.
But would it be THAT bad of an idea...

As long as anything internally doesn't prematurely fail...I don't see why it would be a terrible idea. If you could guarantee a 250k mile engine...you might have something...cuz most folks don't keep their rides that long or swap or that's about the time for a rebuild anyway.

would save oil leaks and gasket issues....

Premature failure's would be hard to deal with.

Besides rebuildability....
Any reasons not to?
Would welding possible warp components, and not let them operate properly, thus leading to premature failure?

Worth there weight in gold if ya ask me.

True dat...after cracking a cast water neck...I knew I needed a tq wrench to prevent me from over tightening.

Yea, speaking of weight in gold
Several years ago when i was working in the trans shop.
Guy bought a blang blang snap on tq wrench, had a display with the tq you were putting out at that moment, along with a beeper to let yo know when you hit the set tq.
Pretty nice feature as well..
If your taking of bolts that were super tight, it would read the max tq used to break the bolts loose and save it so you could go back and see....

They charged him, its weight in gold for it, but that thing was NICE....

Yeah man...I wouldn't be dropping that kinda coin. I'd go pick up one of the $50 analog styles. As long as it functions and accomplishes what I need it to, I'm happy.

I have a craftsman tq wrench i got a few years back i paid 60 for works well...
Just dont leave them at a tq setting, it messes with them and will make em in accurate.

I just got a clickin torque wrench. Also have a wet/dry shop vac handly cause guess where all the coolant goes when ya pull the intake and heads. Id also change the oil right after to be sure all the coolant is out.

These numbers and the bolt tightening sequence should be in the shop manuals right?
