That's awesome for being FREE!!!!! Even if it was an old bone FREE would be worth it so you found one hell of a deal. If I didn't get my truck for basically free I would have possibly gone the route of the 67-72.

Nice project. How'd you luck out on a good deal like that in NJ? lol

I just checked the VIN. My "new" truck was built in May, 1969. The same month as my 78.

what engine are you after? I'm geussing a 390 or 360?

It originally came with a 360, so, I'm looking to stick as close to original as I can.

I would put a 390 personally based on what I've read here since it is the same block and all.

390... its the same as a 360 essentially except crank (stroke length), rods, pistons... everything else is the same...

the 390 makes better power, gets about the same fuel mileage from what i understand and its just overall better than the 360..

If you're gonna fix this thing up, here's a coupla things to be aware of.

They may look the same, but looks can be deceiving...

1) The grille is 1969 Ranger only...has a red painted line is its center horizontal bar that was made concave especially for it.

2) The side mouldings are 1 1/2" wide. 1967's and 1968's before serial number C56,001 have 1 1/4" side mouldings.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1969 VIN engine codes: A = 240 I-6 / B = 300 I-6 / G = 302 2V / H = 390 2V / Y = 360 2V

The 240/300 I-6's look identical as do the 360 and 390.

If buying a 390, be aware that on sale day, 360 engines magically become 390's.

Measure the stroke: 360 = 3.50" // 390 = 3.78."

If buying a C6, get one from a truck. The Passenger Car C6's have a different length extension housing and output shaft, have the NSS mounted on the transmission's selector lever...that is different from a truck.

1965/77 F100/350: The NSS is mounted on the steering column / 1978/79, on the transmission.

9" rear axle: 1957/72 is essentially the same. In 1973, Ford increased the width of the rear frame rails (behind the cab) from 33 1/2" to 37 1/2."

1957/67 F100's have 1 3/4" rear brakes / 1968/72's have 2 1/4" rear brakes (as do 1973/79 F100/150's, some 1980/83 F100's and all 1980/96 F150's.

Some 1980/83 F100's have 10" rear brakes and 5 lug wheels on a 4.50" bolt circle pattern. All other F100/150's have the 5.50" bolt circle pattern (thru 1996).

My neighbor bought a 71 and 69 from someone last summer. He uses the 71 and has never went back for the 69 from the guy he bought it from. He said his wife would wring his neck if he brought another truck home. I made it know that if he wasn't going to do anything with it I would take it off his hands. He told me if it was still there I could have it. It was my good fortune that it hadn't moved or been scrapped.

Nice. free is always a good deal. Now if you can find a rotted out truck with a good drivetrain you'll be set.

I gotta make a trip by you. I hardly see any older trucks for sale near me and if I do I'm always too late by the time I go look at it.
