"i punched in the low range" as-in... it's an electric BW-1356-E?

I've got one of those things in storage that looks like new...

But ATF softened and ruined the insulation on its wires! :/
Bet it hadn't got more than 10 miles -use- on it. ;)

I'm wondering if yours has been acting-up and you changed the
fluid and it suddenly started working... if it isn't more of a wiring
problem and during the fluid chance you just moved the wires
and that "fixed" it. :) (a lot of guessing there)

Could have just been low on fluid as well. When we put mine back together once, it was low and wouldn't shift OUT of 4lo. got enough fluid in it and it worked like a charm.

Cool, didn't know that since I've never used one. LOL :)

Mine wasn't low and the fluid looked like new when I drained it for removal.

Don't know what happens inside a transfer case with ATF, but water in an
air-cooled VW engine or trans-axle and can react with the magnesium case
and eat holes clean through the bottom of 'em. Seen that on dune buggies
that'd been left out in the weather without being covered good enough,
even in Arizona.

yeah thats the exact same motor as mine 13-56 push button on the dash. mine used to act up BEFORE the fluid change i would punch 4hi then go 4lo as i'd do that i would have to hold it down and it would click rapidly like 10 times then engage but when i would put it in drive and gas it, it would be like it was in neutral always only 4hi worked, since then its been working i might have moved the wires plug and unplug but to my memory never engaged the 4lo.... maybe i bumped the wires a while back and never bothered with it?
