That will depend on the state and you would have to inquire for yours (the website should do the trick); I know here in WA they seem to be willing to do all sorts of creative things to provide what people want and of course, take their money. Not only will they let you pick the period correct plate but they also have what I call "canned" decor plates. These have a background with logo/pic of universities, LEM for the cops, PF for the unionized labor at the fire departments, SD for people who are into square dancing, and I'm sure I missed some. About the only restriction on vanity plates and surely period correct plates is they can't use what appears to be a cop or some gov't vehicle plate #, which means is can' start with WSP, C or D and have 5 digits following.

Maigh have a lookie here:

http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistr...ialdesign.html

http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistr...ferplates.html

The immediately above linky is, I believe, what allows the period correct plates.

http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistr...ialdesign.html

Also, for vehicles 30+ years of age (used to be 25 until this year, suckers!) you can get a collector vehicle plate. The law on that is "cute" in that it says you need to use the vehicle in parades, it to/from being on display in a car show and now the part I like a lot......"for the viewing pleasure of others". Got it loud and clear.

^^^just checked on ebay and it looks like the Maine plates stopped stamping the year on it after 1974 and just used stickers.....so even if we were able to use them, it might not be period correct.

NP.

What people here like to do, given that the plate design itself may have been used for several years, is to try to find a set of period correct plates with the only annual sticker/tags on them being for the year the vehicle came out. this means, someone removed the first set of plates, probably because they moved to another state.

If you go that road and if you can use period correct plates, then I would encourage you to understand what actually was period correct and the laws the and today. For example, WA has at least since the 50's required two license plates. So people selling one perfect plate for $$$ on ebay, well, that's not going to be legal on the street today and in reality, IMO, without the second plate, the value went way down on the first. Anyhow, things like this, you probably would want to know about. Talk to neighbors that are older and will remember should help.

I remember when I was 16, I wanted a vanity plate. The thing is, anything my dad would have picked, I wouldn't have wanted it.

Once again, another $.02............

Vanity plates, IMO are a representation of something personal, memorable, or tongue-in-cheek. The boys will want something that is memorable to them at some point in time, thus they will want to pick out what they use.

We had a couple sets of vanity plates, and after awhile, the novelty wore off, and I got tired of explaining what the plate meant.

Ken, those are two beautiful trucks. You won't need a license plate to draw attention to them. Just thinking out loud........My wife tells me not to do that anymore.

Back about 1981 there was a guy with a gorgeous light blue 67 Camaro that had vanity plates with the phrase, "RED BUD". I always wondered what that was about...........

That's one of my pet peeves....if you have a personalized plate, it seems it only serves its purpose if people understand it, but like some have already mentioned, it might be more for their own purposes and not for others to see/notice.

I was kidding about not knowing what it was about, lol, and me should have included these emoticons at the end of my post..... and

A quick check reveals that either a) someone still has it or b) it was *offensive* , it hurt someones feelings and it was recalled/banned. Party poopers. :-/

EDIT......I just typed in "OG KUSH" and it's available. And I bet if someone got it that all sorts of cops would pull them over and the vehicle would be broken into on at minimum, a weekly basis, lol!
