Marine engine Q's

I have a marine 351W engine that upon tear down doesn't make any sense.

It's a '74 block ... D4AE 6015 AA3 w/ a date code of April 14 '76 (6D14)

The crank is from a 289 stamped 1M haven't found any casting #'s yet. And has a 3 bolt balancer C9OE 62SD by the timing marks and 6316 cast into then face.

Rods from a 302 casting # is D6OE

Pistons are from a 351??? has 351W cast into the skirt and D3OE 6110A on the inside of the skirt.

Heads are a '75 model D5AE

the timing cover casting #'s are C9JE 6059 and has the built in pointer.

Main bearings say STD. but I haven't found any #'s yet.

WTF were they thinking, it's like somebody had a bunch of spare parts and just through them together. I didn't think a 289 crank would work in a 351 block.

I tore apart a 2.3L ford ranger motor, and a 2.3L marine ford motor, Side by side. I went to swap cranks and i found that the marine crank journals were ALOT bigger than the regular ford crank...

Ok I lied the crank says 7M instead of 1M like I thought the only other #'s I found on it are W.G8.60 or W.GS.60

I still have no freaking clue what it means I thought 351W cranks said 3M

The numbers don't tell you the whole story. There's no way a 351 block has a 289 crank and 302 rods, the main bearings are a lot bigger on the 351 so this crank would just wobble around in there. Are you positive you have a 351 and not a 302? How wide is the intake?

Yep fo sho it's a W, intake is 11x21 measured behind the carb mount and from the T- stat housing.

Cast in the valley pan is D5JE 9425 EA along with 351 WCP 3

7M = D9AZ-6303-C / Fits 1973/79 351W / 1980/86 is 7MA

Marked with Ford engineering ID number: C9OE-E .. Harmonic Balancer = C9OZ-6316-A 1969 351W ONLY.

Casting numbers (c/n) don't mean diddly squat, because they cannot be cross referenced to actual part numbers.

Just because the c/n has a certain c/n prefix, that does not mean that's what the block was first used, or is the only year it was used.

Case in point, your supposed 1974 block was actually used 1973/78: D5OZ-6010-A.

The same 351W pistons were used 1973/79.

How do you know the rods are from a 302?

R U sure the timing cover is marked C9JE? J = industrial engine.

Look again, could it be C9UE?

If so, that's the timing cover used 1969/72 (essentally thru 1979, cuz Ford changed the part number). It's also the same as a 302 and late 1965's & 1966/68 289's.

The timing cover (undergoing several p/n changes) was used 1969/78 and on 1979's without EEC...this is not the timing cover you posted the ID number from, this is the one marked C9UE

Tks Bill, for all the work you go through to look this stuff up.
Bill is aka NumberDummy elsewhere.

If it was work, I wouldn't do it. In my twisted mind....this is fun.

Eh I don't use Google, but looks like I may have to start, Cuz there it be.

And I got it a full hour before Bill.......smilietease

Quick trick to ID a 302/351 if you don't happen to have a tape measure.

The water pump "holes" on the 302 enter/exit at the top of the deck, DIRECTLY under the head(s).

There's a decent space on the 351. (about 1")

Looks like a U to me...the die used to make that mark is worn down/broken.

There's too much of a curve on the left side for that to be a J.
