inexpensive brand of tire?

I need to start looking for some tires for the 56. I am broke (as usual) so I thought I would ask you for some brand and model ideas.

The 4 tires that are on the ground are used ones I bought about 2 years ago for $80 (mounted and balanced). The one on the spare is an old bias ply that was given to me (It leaks bad) because I needed the wheel to match the rest. Ford stopped using these wheels in 64.

The current tires do not have much tread left, so its time to start looking.

The tires are 215/75/15s. That is pretty close to the original size bias ply that the truck came with back 50+ years ago.

I would like to be able to buy 5 new ones if possible. I do not care if they are white wall, raised white letter, or black wall.

Sure...I would love a set of WWW (wide white walls), but they are way to many $$$$ for tires that are not used that much. I only drive the 56 a few thousand miles a year.

In fact, I can't even drive it now with this boot thing on my foot. GRRRR!

Thanks all,
Brian

First suggestion would be to check TireRack.com...

Last winter, I picked up two cheap Firestones for my Ranger, $25 a piece- some sort of close-out, I assume. With shipping, came to $72, then I had to get them mounted (which I don't really count as I had to have the snow tires removed and something put back on there, anyway.

Mastercraft is another brand I've known people to like; seems like a lot of mechanics who only sell a few tires carry them.

Thats pretty cheap. Right now (not real sure how to find bargains on there) the cheapest ones that are not snow tires are $55 each. I looked around on there before posting.

I am not in a hige rush (and broke), but I need to start looking for sure.

The mastercraft website shows a dealer here...it happened to have went out of business about 10 years ago (or longer). LOL

Interesting bit of info though:

Mastercraft Tires are one of a number of tire brands owned by the Cooper Tire & Rubber Company.

I just entered the size, and that I was looking for an all-season, then sorted the results by price.

Best tires I've ever owned (admittedly a very limited number) were a brand called Aurora, never heard of 'em before or since. When I got the truck, the fronts were shot due to a bad alignement, and the rears were fair with about 40k on 'em. I replaced the rears with the Firestones after another 20k, and even then only because I got such a deal on the Firestones (would have run them one more summer otherwise) and now one of them is on my trailer... Slip in the glovebox says the four (slightly smaller than yours) cost the previous owner about $240 total.

I'm a cheap SOB, and tires are one of my extra-cheap quirks... Especially on your truck (no high speeds, no snow, probably sits enough that time is more of a concern than treadwear), I'd call around and the cheapest round, black tire in the right size is what I'd buy (retailer biases withstanding, of course).

good years are pretty good the owl ones that Aaron has there. THey wear pretty good until you get them about the point there about to go bald and then they will wear funny.

I got a tire in mind but i gotta remember who made it, Started with an E but they were 35.00 a pop mounted and balance where i used to work. And we put them on EVERYTHING

I run the no names (off brands) on plow trucks And The same with the company dumps at work ,we put allot of miles with maxuim weight in bed and never had problems . Now rebar through the side wall.

I know what u mean about limited funds. You shopuld be luck the 215 75 15 r no to bad . 1 sized more and price jumps big time. Good luck one search . I know of some really nice used ones but shipping would be more than tires.

smilieIagree The way Nick goes through tires on his Ranger, I find used take-offs. For the P265-16 on-off road's he uses, I can get a set for $150-$170 mounted and balanced, about 1/3 the price of new.

That is actually what I did the last time. Used tires are extremely hard to find around here with any amount of tread left. This is what they looked like 2 years ago when I got 4 for $80 (mounted and balanced). Not much tread, but...they have held air this long. Just zero traction even on the dry roads.

Those were the best ones in the area. Most poeple around here are not rich and run them until the steel is sticking out.

It is definately hit and miss actually finding any around here. That may very well be what I have to do though.
