Do I need a block heater?

I live in the High Desert of So. Cal. Winter temps at night are sometimes high 20s, low 30s, often between 30 and 40. Once every several years we will get a freak freeze and see teens. Do I need a block heater for my (new to me) 7.3 for any of these times?

Only if you start to have trouble starting.

I'm with Vince. I typically don't plug in unless it is consistently in the teens and lower on my IDI. You should be fine as long as the glow plugs are in good shape. Only advantage otherwise is less time to warm up the engine and components, as well as faster heat in the cab.
