Any differences between the 61'-66' tail gates

I went snooping around the industrial area of our city today, and came across an old Mercury similar to mine behind some old shop. There wasn't much left of the truck, but found a rust free Mercury tailgate laying in the bed! The tailgate on my Mercury had been stolen or destroyed long before I owned it, and no Merc. is complete without this piece, so I need to have it. Haha...

Are there any differences between the tailgates year 61' through 66'? I would like to make sure before I offer the owner anything.

Thanks,

Derek.

I wouldn't know... But I know that the trucks are VERY similar. :D

I'm sure the gate will work then. The tailgate on the truck I found is very similar looking, and the width will be the same so I am not worried. Must be a 64 gate, as the truck still has the leaf spring front suspension... Mine, does not.

Thanks,

Derek

Keep in mind the early standard pickups can also be found with the old style bed/gate - the slab sided 57-60 style box.

Also in the top picture are you sure that is a std pickup and not a unibody? It sure looks like a uni gate with those distinctive handles and strap hinges.

Yes, that top picture is a unibody. I thought unibody was all they built in a styleside from '61 through '63... along with the flareside and slabside

I'll take your word for it - I don't know my slicks very well. I can't tell you when the styleside boxes came along.

And I agree that's a good deal for a tailgate, especially for a Merc.

It has more rust than I first thought. mainly along the bottom where the sheet metal rolls around. It is straight, and definitely worth fixing, and you just don't see them very often any more.

Going to take it over to the blaster and have it soda blasted. I will then epoxy prime and seal, and begin the body work. Should be fun!

B7C9940700A / Fits: 1961/64 F100/250 4WD / 1961/66 F350 / 1963 F100/250 2WD (not a Uni *) / 1965 F100/250 4WD / 1966 F250 4WD.

All these trucks used the 1957/60 Styleside bed.

C4TZ9940700A / Fits: 1964/66 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F100 4WD.

In September 1966, Ford obsoleted C4TZ9940700A replaced it with C7TZ9940700A = 1967/72 F100/350 for use as a service part replacement.

The 1967/72 tailgate fits, but has smaller FORD block letters, which are surrounded by a raised ovate scallop line.

There were Mercury versions of all these tailgates.

* In mid-year 1963, Ford cancelled the Unibody. Ford then installed the 1957/60 bed on these trucks.
