whats the general rule for tire width=wheel width? can you squeeze an 8.5-9inch rim in 14.5? or 12 inches into 14.5? i got 8.5 on my 13.5 toyo mt and they run good and hold air always.... ????

I run 9.75-10" wide rims and have gone up to 14.5" wide tires. I really don't think I'd go much wider. That being said, you bead should be more secure at pressure. But you'll probably start haing more problems as you air down, and I don't think I'd go any less than 12psi. If I were you, I'd step up rim width, nbut if you're at 9" and you're going 14.5" wide tire, I think you'd be fine until you started airing down.
