visually how can ya tell the different between a 351 and a 302?

There's a difference in the intake plenum.

The 351W is physically larger than a 302... Taller deck height and wider intake manifold...

Another way to tell is by looking at the distributor hold down. If the hold down is flush with the bottom of the intake manifold, its a 302, if the bottom of the intake manifold sits about 1" above the hold down, it's a 351W. I have a picture if need be.

Another way is to look at the water pump area in comparison to the heads. The heads are right against the waterpump casting on a 302, while there is about 1" between the water pump and the head on a 351.
