99 ford ranger needs help w/ 4wd

Hubby needs some help figuring out why his 4wd won't stay engaged. He puts it in 4 wheel high, drives about a mile, stops and takes off, rear wheel spins like no longer in 4wd. But switch on dash says it is still in 4wd.

anyone have any ideas?

Are there any indications it's ever engaging four-wheel drive? Can he hear it "click" (from under the truck) like it does when it's working?

Does the light stay on solid, or flash, when he turns the switch to 4-high?

My first guess is that it's the shift motor, and the 4x4 is just never engaging...but more info would be helpful.

possibility of defective lockout(s)

This is weird I would go get the codes pulled maybe you can come up with somthing there. If you have automatic locking hubs there junk buy manual ones. I used to have autos in my ranger till one of them got stuck in the lock position and made nice clunking sounds going down the road.
