I've tried it. Their photos are dated and incomplete. According to google earth, I live in the middle of a dairy cow pasture, and the only place I could find that actually EXISTED when the photos were taken was in New Zealand.........

I've had a free version of Google Earth for quite some time. Not sure if it's as accurate or up to date as a paid for version. Guess I'll have to go look at my brother's. I installed mine, but he lost it, so he just went and bought one online somewhere.

I love it though. When Isreal and Bubba were fighting, I checked out some bombed out airfields. I think someone said, no more satellite images for a while please... the next day it was more blurred.

Anyway.. I likey. Now wifey wants me to start a "gentle fire" in the stove...thought I'd clarify there.... so its off to the woodpile I go!

Amazing how I can look at mine and determine when it was taken by the vehicles laying about, lol...

The pics I saw were so old that I was still living in an apartment in Republic when the sat picture was taken. My car was parked out front of my old apartment. Since then I've moved to Midland Tx, then Edmond Ok, then back here............And got married to boot.

Think they need to update their database

Type in Boyd, TX (in fly to) then go SSE of town to "County Rd." follow it east almost to the railroad tracks about where it turns SE, stop (zoom in) do street view pan around and you will see my house, garage, and barn. It's a good thing I had my garage door closed that day, or everyone on earth would know how messy I am.smilieneenar

My understanding is that the camera rotates in circles and takes pictures like a machine gun as the car drives down the street.

Microsoft was taking a different approach with their vehicles:

There are 4 still pictures of the town I live in. One is of a water tower that was torn down years ago. The local NAPA store is on that "lot" and has been for...oh my...many years.

One is the court house in the town square (no way to tell age on that one).

One is the local college, but it has had a lot of construction since then.

The last is supposedly a frank loyd right building (no clue how that is spelled) that is supposed to be in town here. I have lived here since 81 (been coming up here all my life though) and never heard of it (nor seen it).

I just wonder if it is from somewhere else and got stuck on the wrong map.

I'm pretty sure the street view car takes 1 picture every x feet. It shoots it into one of those globe mirror things. That's how the 360 virtual tour things work.

Yup, I've used google earth many times as well as street view; I think it's great! As for privacy matters regarding street view, bwah. What can be seen of ones property from public view is just that, heck, many counties have a website for the assessor online; such websites often include a photograph of the home. For that matter, sometimes the assessor (or one of their agents) comes onto private property and will take photos of structures/outbuildings that are not readily visible from public view then adds them to their website allowing public viewing. They also are known to add the floor plan for peoples houses to their site and make it public (they've done that to me). Google street view is pretty petty, IMO.

*For those that don't know it, those satellite images are used by county assessors and building departments to nab people who have done things that increase the value of their property yet failed to take out permits or have a clan of mean dogs keeping the assessor off of the property. The dated before and after pics don't lie, and the look on the unsuspecting, lying property owners face must be priceless when the county confronts them  .

Those street views are merely images attached to google earth by regular people via the panoramio web site .

I attached a few yesterday.

Have you ever used video from a business that just happened to have a cam pointed at the parking lot/street to determine an at-fault driver?

CowboyBilly9Mile

^^ Bump ^^

CaFordDude
12-26-2008, 12:11 PM
Not to actually determine who was at fault but yes I always check local businesses for video to help support my findings. Red light cameras are great also.

Crahses that happen in parking lots (private property) we generally don't determne fault at because the rules of the road don't apply on private property. For example when a stop sign is posted on a street corner there are very specific dimensions, placement, composition and certifications that are necessary to make it a "legal" stop sign. Private property can put up whatever piece of cardboard they have laying around and call it a stop sign. We don't enforce them AND there is no legal obligation to obey them.

With the popularity of video surveillance now it has really helped police departments solve crimes. Our department just solved one using indian casino footage to solve a robbery that happened 20 miles away in our city.

Mil1ion
12-26-2008, 12:20 PM
Aaron do you enforce the "stop before the sign then proceed when safe to do so" or do you allow people to stop just PAST the stop sign, then proceed when safe to do so ?

Up here the law is to Stop just BEFORE the sign not after.

CaFordDude
12-26-2008, 12:55 PM
Here in CA there is what's called a "limit line" painted on the road. Law requires to stop BEFORE the limit line. Some of the lines are poorly placed and don't allow full view of the intersection.

As long as the stop is made in reasonable relation to where it is suppose to be I'm cool with that.

The Google Earth data for Wylie (town I'm from, down by Dallas) is high quality and pretty much up to date, though Street View isn't available for it.

Durant, OK, where I'm going to school, the Google Earth data is horribly out of date and grainy, and Google Maps even is missing a lot of streets (doesn't even show the college), and of course, no Street View.

They have changed the map, so you can see my house. However the map is at least from 1999. My house has a green roof in the pic. The first day of 2000, it started to be re-roofed. It is a medium brown now.
