Speedometer cable

So as I was adding a quart of oil to the '71 I happened to look up and notice a little piece bolted to the inner fender near the firewall that had a short speedometer cable going into it then a longer one out and to the trans, along with that there's a two wire connector going from the piece through the firewall grommet and under the dash (I haven't traced the wires).

I can't find anything on this...

Auto, BUT I've built and stripped more of these trucks than I care to admit (have three here and two out at my Grandma's currently) and have never seen another one like it...

Only thing I can think of would be some sort of aftermarket cruise setup?

I dunno nothin' about nothin', but there can't be that many reasons you'd put an electronic sensor midway up the speedometer on a pre-computer truck....
